Feeding & Swallowing Disorders
Picky eating, chewing difficulty and unsafe swallowing.
Paediatric feeding disorder covers refusal of textures, poor chewing, gagging, prolonged mealtimes and unsafe swallowing (dysphagia). Causes may be oral-motor, sensory, behavioural or medical, and treatment combines all of these lenses.
Early signs
- Eats fewer than 15 foods
- Gags or vomits with new textures
- Coughing during drinking
- Mealtimes longer than 30 minutes
How it is diagnosed
- Oral motor and feeding evaluation
- Mealtime observation
Our approach
- Orange combines speech-language pathology and occupational therapy for feeding, with a graded food hierarchy and no force-feeding.
